The expression in goede aarde vallen [lit. to fall on good soil] propels us into the future. It means: to hope something will be well-received. But there’s only space for hope when there is uncertainty. This is where tension arises ...

CONTRIBUTING ARTISTS EDITION #1 IN GOEDE AARDE VALLEn

PERSONAL COLLECTION

DINAYA WAEYAERT

I invite the viewer into my intimate world without being part of it myself. You can sense my presence in the role of the voyeur. Making images that represent moments of connection with my subject. Intimacy between lovers and friends are often shared in private. Hidden from the outsider gaze, while I love to put this all out on display. The tenderness and affection is portrayed in a raw and explosive way.

IN MEMORIAM OR BLUE

MADELEINE KUKIC

When someone you love develops Alzheimer’s, a storm rolls in. Slowly — but too fast to be able to adapt — everything changes. Time is no longer linear…… After he passed away, I went to the island again to find the first wild orchids, commemorate my father, make cyanotypes and be silent.

VIRGIN SOIL

CéCILE SMETANA BAUDIER

Although the people in my photographs might be far apart geographically, they are all around that age when you are leaving childhood behind and gaining the courage to become your own person. The series attempts to reflect on the universal sentiment of growing up and that stage in life, which is so full of uncertainty.

KINDERSZENEN

LIONEL JUSSERET

I photographed, worked and lived for almost ten years at the institution J’interviendrais. Many of the children there have severe forms of autism, mostly non-verbal. Other children are said to be psychotic, schizophrenic, with behavioural disorder, abused, homeless, unbearable, deficient… all those words that our western society uses to label people that can't be defined. Sick people. And me, the more I see them, the more I think they just look like children.

STONE UNTURNED

MARIJKE DE SCHEPPER

He feels the sand, grabs the rocks, toes the surf, taunts the water. His sounds are loud and the screams fight with the wind and the breaking waves. But they are not words. Not to us. He knows this place by instinct. This is holy ground. Every stone sits on hidden treasure and with each fresh wave new excitement washes ashore.

VERTEX

Miriam Tölke

Getting hold of the world in its fast pace and volatility, to grab scraps and put everything back together, for a moment of peace and inner retreat - this is one of the concerns that pursues Miriam Tölke in her photo collages. She stacks everything in her studio, discovers, pulls individual leaves out of their bindings, rearranges them and cuts out first impressions as forms. Faces are halved, landscapes chosen – everything that is important to Miriam and what reflects her own impressions.

THE CHARACTERS

TONJE BØE BIRKELAND

The romantic motives of the male wanderer have been well-documented and well-portrayed in art history. In my project, the portrayed characters are female. The heroine moves in pristine territory: in front of her looms grand exploration; beneath her, history is formed. However, despite grand vistas and sublime experiences, expeditions come at a price, both in the past and today.

MY OWN GENDER

SEVILAY MARIA VAN DORST

During the past three years, my work has explored the extensive grey zone that exists within sexes. The #MYOWNGENDER project is the final chapter of this exploration. Models who identify as fluid within the spectrum of gender are captured on black glass through collodion wet-plating. They share their story in short interviews. No matter what their pronoun may be. No matter how old or young. No matter their background or religion.

ROOTSTOCK

CHARLOTTE APITULEY

Nature doesn’t seem to care if things are unfair. We all have to take care of our own rootstock, make sure we protect the balance, so we can all thrive. For me, as a photographer, I try to see things differently, to find connection. To find compassion in others and in myself. To find beauty in unexpected places. And I often realise how incredibly lucky I am.

IN DAMARALAND

AMBER ZEEKAF

That tension between revealing and hiding. Between being seen and not being seen. A recreated reality. Just as the ever-changing sand dunes ensure that the horizon is never the same, my travels – especially this trip through this beautiful land – will also change me forever.

IN FRONT OF ME

JEANNETTE HUISMAN

It’s my love for adventure and allowing things to come on my path that make my travels true moments of exploration. Opting to discover by doing rather than researching everything online. We left with only a return ticket to our beloved Bangkok, with no plan for the three months in between.

NOTE TO SELF

TATCHATRIN CHOEYCHOM

Every person carries multiple character traits inside her. Some of these traits can make you proud and are well perceived by the outside world, while others are regarded as weakness or imperfections. Although the sum of these traits defines who you really are, it does not necessarily equal the person you would like to be. Note to Self refers to the constant inner struggle of self-acceptance and the imposed personal and societal standards that influence this struggle.
